"Never be surprised"
Over 7000 football lovers challenged the chilly evening in Nineveh Arena to watch, what could be, the historical play-off game against Djurgårdens IF. Assyriska have tried two times before but didn?t make it all the way. The first one was against Örebro 1999 and the second against Örgryte 2004. Djurgården came to Södertälje with good confidence after winning three games in a row. The Assyriska players haven?t performed as well as they used to against Jönköping but they showed the right character which could be the essential factor to win the last two.
Assyriska started well with good attacking combination and aggressive defense which gave the players more possession of the ball. Djurgården couldn?t keep up which was obvious when they had to make brutal tackles against our players to stop our wonderful play. Stefan Batan got so badly tackled that he had to get off after 17 minutes. Kristoffer Näfver came on instead. Assyriska kept on dominating and the crowd was all waiting for the first goal of the game. It came on the 38th minute. Näfver crossed the ball perfectly between two Djurgården defenders, to a running Dennis Östlundh which he headed on the keepers right side. Minute later, Djurgården was close to get the equalizing goal but the ball went outside Berglund?s left post.
When the second half started, we expected Djurgården to attack with all their men to equalize but Conny Karlsson told his men to play as they did on the first half, and so it became. Assyriska was the creator and Djurgården was the spectators. On the 47th the ball was just about to pass the short line when Eddie Moussa ran ahead of his defender, stole the ball and passed it to Göran Marklund who did what he does best. 2-0 was a fact and the crowd went crazy, singing and dancing to the Assyrian song Bagiye.
Djurgården tried with everything but couldn?t do much and it ended with an Assyrian festival inside and outside the arena. On the press conference, Conny Karlsson was asked by many reporters if he was surprised by how the Assyriska players performed and he said ? You can never be surprised when it comes to Assyriska" The return game will be in Stockholm Stadion on Sunday 8th November at 4:45 CET.
